The high Negev desert area - where Mitzpe Ramon and NANA farm is located is characterized by very low annual precipitation of roughly 70 mm (2.75 inch). Such dry conditions as in Mitzpe Ramon and the desert in general were considered for years inadequate for agricultural use. However, with the work of pioneering idealist people and the help of drip irrigation technology growing crops in the Negev desert was found not only possible but advantageous. Surprising as it may sound, the desert land offers unique advantages for some crops cultivation. Olives and grapes for example can enjoy and benefit from the salinity and significant temperature differences between day and night. The exotic desert conditions actually give rise to unique, tasty, trophy winning wines and olive oils. Nana farm is one example where the desert special harsh conditions were used for extraordinary wine making.
